Oh, the colors of spring! Mostly green. Green everywhere with dots of rich pinks and yellows. Quite a difference from just a few months ago when going on a hike meant hiking in a black and white landscape.
Captured colors of spring, pink Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) with background hints of bright yellow Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum), both native to Virginia.

A cluster of Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum), just coming into bloom in the past couple days. Shortly those buds will be blooming too, filling the woods with pink.
If you look closely, at nearly the center of the picture, there is an Eastern Tailed Blue(Cupido comyntas) posing in a perfect manner. It’s a tiny butterfly that captivates me.
The dorsal (top) side of an Eastern Tailed-Blue (Cupido comyntas) is not often seen, as they typically rest with their wings closed. When they land they keep their wings up and closed, showing the ventral side (down), the dull gray side. The males’ dorsal side is a beautiful blue. The dorsal side of the females’ wings are dark gray, leaning a tiny bit toward blue during spring.

This afternoon, climbing up the mountain I was really pleased to find a Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) blooming with the look of, “Happy SPRING!” These flowers are one of many on my list of favorite flowers.
And to top off the fun color, cool leaves, and how they grow into beautiful clumps, comes the enchanting way their seeds are distributed. Above you see fruit capsules waiting to dry.
As they dry they will reach a point where stress is created and the fruits split, curl up and backward, flinging the seeds as much as 10 to 30 feet away.
What is left, in the photo above, delights me. I think of it as a carousel made for tiny forest fairies.
I would love to come by one day and see the fairies riding on the carousel!
