An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) sipping sugary, energy-rich nectar from Purple Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea).
It’s marvelous to have so many native plants in bloom, attracting multitudes of pollinators!

Purple Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) pairing up with Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia fulgida) surrounded by many other flowers blooming on the back hill.
But I’m patiently waiting for the highlight of the summer, the Maryland state flower, Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta). Looking quite a bit like the Black-eyed Susans in this image but I know the difference.
And because it is the Maryland state flower, it is important to me. I’m being patient. I can tell the difference, as the stems and leaves emerge. They’re on their way. They just take a bit longer to bloom..

The weather folks had been talking about it so much. Rain starting in the middle of the night, becoming freezing rain. Many counties arranged to open school on a two hour delay. As the morning went on it warmed just a tiny bit. With the slight warmth, the magic of ice covering everything vanished. I love that look. Ice creating a shimmer on everything in sight.
This, seedheads of Purple Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea), on ice. Soon to be gone as the birds in the woods come to find a meal.
