A Juvenile Phoebe

There has been an Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) nest on top of the light at my back door for a bit now. The residents have been extremely cautious and I would not even know that it’s there except for the nest itself sitting there in plain view, high above.

This afternoon my *always on the alert for all things nature oriented* husband noticed a bird sitting on the hook in the vegetable garden, and called my attention to it. It was sitting there looking just like a Phoebe, and flicked its tail like they always do but something was wrong. The bird had an incredibly subtle wrong color look about it. Head and wings with a slight cinnamon tint rather than the expected total gray look. Chest speckled rather than a more solid gray.

Turns out this is a juvenile from that nest. First time my camera has ever captured one!

Phoebe In The Garden

An Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) in the garden looking for flying insects, which they catch in mid-air. I’ve been watching, within a few days I expect a female Phoebe will begin building a nest at the site she has come to in years past. Under the eaves of the woodshop.

My Buddy The Phoebe

Their breeding and wintering ranges overlap here in Virginia, so I’m fortunate that I’ve got Eastern Phoebes (Sayornis phoebe) year round. Flipping tail. Often coming back to the same nest year after year. The independent sort. Eating berries when insects can’t be found.

Always On Duty!

I’ve got an Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) that seems to be always hanging around the yard, flying from its perch to catch an insect mid-flight and then coming back to that same perch. They’re solitary birds, not sociable.

If there was any uncertainty of what this species of bird this is, I could always watch for the often flicking of its tail. And that tail, though not forked, certainly is notched.

Glad it’s here on duty hunting those insects. During winter it will eat small fruits and berries, including Poison Ivy berries.

Not The Usual Pose

An Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) enjoying the warmth of a birdbath. I captured this shot yesterday. The birdbath is definitely not the usual place that I see Phoebes.

This picture is from back in November and illustrates how I usually see Phoebes. Sitting on a bare branch, or the top of a post, just waiting for an insect to fly by. An insect that would become some of the Phoebe’s sustenance for the day.

There certainly weren’t any insects flying around yesterday. The high temperature for the day was 32º. During these mighty cold days Phoebes will find small fruits and berries to eat until it gets warmer and their usual meals are on the wing again.

Eating Berries During The Cold Of Winter

The Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe), a small bird that is here all year. During the warm months I love to see the little Phoebe as it consumes lots and lots of insects. As the seasons change and there are fewer insects, the Phoebe will eat berries and small fruits.

I’d love to see more of them around in part because the Phoebes are so unperturbed by my presence, but also for insect control. But this bird is a loner. Even mated pairs spend little time together.

Phoebes will often return to the same nest year after year. This has happened here, returning to a nest site under the eaves of our wood shop. The female builds or repairs the nest using mud, moss, and leaves mixed with grass stems and animal hair.

And not a shy bird. It’s one that I’m able to get pictures of, quite easily.
