Noisy Little One

A fiesty little one. Noisy too. Chattering away, particularly if you’re in a spot where it would rather you not be. A year round resident that makes a nest in various funny spots. Spots like a basket, a graniteware coffee pot, and when they can’t find anything else they’ll actually build a nest in a birdhouse right next to the front door.

Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus). A charming little bird. I thoroughly enjoy having them around.

A Nest Full Of Little Ones

They like to build their nests in a huge variety of strange things. On my front porch they have used this basket several times.

And on other occasions they chose to build their nest in an ancient graniteware coffee pot.

And now, they are raising another brood in this star-shaped bird house.

Just a thought, don’t leave your boots out on the porch too long.

Ever Present

A friendly little critter that sings to me and scolds me without fail. I have read that this is a shy bird. Hmmm. That doesn’t sound like this bird.

This is a Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus), a bird that is always around chattering away. One that doesn’t hold back. It is said that the male Carolina Wren sings, but not the female. Well these guys are, for sure, chatterboxes. Whether I’m hiking up the mountain or working right here around the cabin, there is one telling me all about what has been happening in its world.

Little Wren In Big Yucca

This afternoon I spied it as it looked all around. Maybe looking for the rest of its family. Yesterday there were 3 of them talking to each other and hopping here and there. A Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) in a Yucca filamentosa.

The little Carolina Wren has a surprising average life span of 6 years. That’s impressive. Not necessarily a dependable feeder visitor, but it loves a bird bath even during the winter if you can provide a water warmer.

Carolina Wren, Preening

This is a Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus), preening its feathers after taking a dip in the bird bath. Preening is an activity that all birds take part in, to keep their feathers in tip-top shape.

The act of preening enables birds to eliminate dirt and parasites from their feathers. It helps in repairing splits in feathers by reconnecting the individual strands or barbs of the feathers together again.

Most birds also have a preen glad at the base of their tail which they rub their bills against and then rub the bills against their feathers. This helps to keep their feathers in good shape and also helps to keep their feathers waterproof.
