A Flower For Hummingbirds

The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubrid) that come to my yard know that I grow some plants just for them.

Plants that seem designed for the hummingbirds’ color preference of brilliant red, with flower shapes that are perfect for their long beaks. Blooms that have deep pockets of nectar, managing to position their pollen perfectly to be taken by the hummingbirds’ heads from one flower to another.

This flower is Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis). One of many flowers in my garden, planted for the hummingbirds.

Oh What Color!

What joy to have these flowers blooming right now. Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis), a member of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). Native to the southeastern part of Canada, south through the eastern and southwestern United States, on to Mexico as well as Central America, finally to northern Colombia.

Such fun to find it right now, whether going down the mountain and seeing its brilliant red flower spikes rising up from a ditch, or while out hiking and finding some blooming next to a stream, or looking out my kitchen window at one of the gardens as a Ruby-throated Hummingbird comes to this flower which seems to be designed just for hummingbirds.

Joy indeed.

Cardinal Flowers In Bloom

Cardinal Flowers (Lobelia cardinalis) in bloom. Perfect timing for the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that are coming through on their way to their winter homes of Central America and Mexico.

Long tubular, nectar filled flowers, perfect for hummingbirds. Flowers that are native to southeastern Canada south through the eastern and southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America to northern Colombia.

I love brilliant colors and these red beauties certainly have my heart. Though this picture is from my yard, I sometimes come upon Cardinal Flowers in the wild. When that happens I’m totally pleased.
