After An Absence Of A Few Weeks

February 18, 2025

A bit more than a month ago I saw seven Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) gathered at the birdbath. They were enjoying the water which was not frozen on a very cold day.

Not any since then until today when I caught a quick glimpse of just one. Just checking things out I suppose. Hoping more will show up again soon.

When I’m watching please.

Bluebirds At Noon Today

Many Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) gathered at the birdbath today.

They live here in Virginia all year. During the summer they eat insects and there is plenty for them to eat here in the winter too, including the fruit of Eastern Red Cedar, Bayberry, Flowering Dogwood, Hawthorn, Holly, Mistletoe, Pokeberry, Serviceberry, Sumac, Winterberry, Wild Grape, Hackberry, Poison Ivy and Multiflora Rose, to name just a few of the berries and fruit they’ll eat.

They’re a delight to see no matter what the season. I’m so glad they enjoy my birdbaths.

A Slow Moment In The Snow

During the snow yesterday, at a slow moment with very few flakes dropping from the sky, I was pleased to see several Bluebirds (Sialia sialis). Most of them were further up in a tree out of my range for getting a photo without disturbing them. But I did manage to get this one sitting in a Flowering Dogwood tree (Cornus florida).

While preparing to write this post I had thoughts of using the word for a group of Bluebirds. After all there is a murder of crows, which is 3 or more crows. Not 1, not 2 but 3 or more. Or a parliment of owls. And many other interesting words for describing a group of one species of birds. But for Bluebirds, what did my search provide me with? A flock.

What a disappointment that was. But all the various birds that showed up on a wondrous snow day, pure pleasure!
