The American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) the ultimate seedeater. Enjoying the seeds of Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta).
I leave my gardens during the winter, to be cleaned up in the spring. That leaves the seedheads as a source of food for the birds all winter long. And I can always depend on the Goldfinches to be the ones most often taking advantage of the situation.

I’ve been waiting. There is a relatively new planting of Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta), the Maryland state flower, on the back hill. I never clean up my gardens until late spring. That leaves the seedheads there all winter long for birds to come and enjoy a tasty treat through no effort by me. I’ve seen very few birds coming to this particular patch of seeds until this morning when two Goldfinches (Spinus tristis) came and spent a good bit of time working at those seeds.
Mission accomplished.

It was forecasted and it sure did happen. A totally gorgeous sight to wake up to. That is, wake up to after the transformer just a couple hundred feet away blew up. Thank goodness for the generator which came on right after the power went out. Oh but what a delightful sight. Mother Nature had painted absolutely everything with a thick layer of ice.
