Indigo Bunting At The Dripper

An Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyan) at the dripper, trying to stay cool, showing off his beautiful colors as he hangs on.

These Buntings are here in Virginia just for the breeding season. During that time they eat insects and spiders, along with berries, and small seeds. Concentrating mainly on protein rich insects and spiders.

As winter approaches they head south toward their wintering grounds which include southern Florida and central Mexico, and further south through the West Indies and Central America, and all the way to northern South America.

    1. Oh Doreen! I’m sorry to hear that you’ve never seen one of these brilliantly colored birds. We go way back. I used to see them regularly when I was an avid bicyclist, riding way out on the W&OD Trail, from Arlington and back home again. They’d always greet me as I passed, while they were perched on the utility wires alongside the trail, with their songs. Not a bird that I’d see in the backyard in Arlington. They’re only this far north during the summer but it is wonderful to have them here at least for their breeding season!
      Hoping you two have not melted.
