Hints Of Autumn

August 22, 2026

Autumn is just around the corner and nature is throwing out hints here and there, to let us know. Every now and then there is a Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) that’s ahead of the game, turning its leaves from green to red. Actually there are some Dogwoods that begin the process in early July, though most people don’t notice the change until it becomes dramatic.

For us, astronomical autumn begins on Tuesday, September 22, at 8:05 OM EDT. My preferred seasonal change is the meteorological calendar, and that has autumn beginning on September 1.

My preference for the meteorological calendar has a good bit to do with my love of winter, and the changing seasons.
