Yellow-bellied Sapsucker At The Birdbath

November 28, 2025

Even when it’s cold, like now, birds need water. Here a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) enjoys having some water available at the birdbath.

    • Hi Theresa! Great to hear from you! These woodpeckers migrate, which is unusual for a woodpecker, and I wonder if they just don’t occur in your area. They are here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in the winter. I hope you’ll discover one sometime soon!
So very glad that you get my posts!

  1. Call it coincidence or not, after your post yesterday, one of these sapsuckers visited our dogwood tree. I love the patterns they make in the trees!

    • Hi Diane! Who would have thought that one of the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers would show up at your place right after I wrote about them! Magic!?!
I had an old apple tree that was highly decorated with the beautiful patterns of these artist/birds. Unfortunately it was relatively close to our cabin and we decided to clear trees within many feet of the cabin due to the concern about forest fires. So the tree is gone, but I still have other trees, not as close to admire their work.
