Tiny Lilies In Bloom

April 16, 2025

Pure joy every spring when these diminutive Trout Lilies (Erythronium americanum) decide to emerge from the soil and reach their short stems skyward.

In preparation to becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist, I took a natural history class in Charlottesville many years ago. That class was incredible in its content. We took many field trips and I saw things I had never seen before, including Trout Lily in bloom. That inspired me to get some to add to my garden.

They are certainly beautiful flowers but, oh so tiny! Two leaves and a stem reaching up to no more than six inches. Not quite small enough for a doll house though.

  1. We had trout lilies growing wild in the woods quite close to our house in Westchester NY. It was always such a pleasure to see them.
Where did you buy them Bren? I have a small patch of white and red trillium that have thrived despite deer etc. that I bought from the Native Plant sale in Ivy many years ago. Maybe trout lilies need to be added!

  2. Hi Jackie, great to hear from you! Ya know, it has been so long since I put those Trout Lilies in that I don’t recall where I got them. I wish there were more places that sell natives. When I lived in Arlington I’d go to Merrifield Nursery (located in Merrifield)
since they carry some native but that’s too far. I also sometimes order things from a place in Frenchtown, NJ, Toadshade Wildflower Farm. They’re great to deal with.

Wondering if you have Hummingbirds now. We have at least 2. Kevin in Batesville also has at least 2.

So glad you read my posts!

    • We saw our first yesterday, again today. Hbird Central had one here on April 11th, was that you? We’re glad to have them back!
